Los Angeles Opera

Late in 2005, we were contacted by the Los Angeles Opera to collaborate with Constance Hoffman's unique design for Beowulf and his warriors in the upcoming World Premiere production of "Grendel". We have been delighted to have had this honor and to work in such a creative fashion on this project with the LA Opera and Ms. Hoffman to fashion a type of armour that is without a doubt both ancient and unique. This ground breaking co-production with the Lincoln Center has been a long time in it's gestation and has been expounded upon most generously by Smithsonian magazine in this article.

Constance Hoffman's original drawing for the armour to be worn by Beowulf and his warriors, and fitting for the role.

Jay Hunter has joined us again for LAO’s world premiere of Grendel. Jay will sing the role of Unferth, a hero-type thane as depicted in the John Gardner book." (Beowulf and his warriors) "will be costumed in personalized body armor designed by the Schmitthenner Armory of Screven, Georgia." -Bob Bernard, The Opera League of Los Angeles

Another visual stunner is the entrance of Beowulf and his gold-mail clad warriors and choreographer Angelin Preljocaj's electrifying ballet in which Beowulf, danced with breathtaking grace and power by Desmond Richardson, finally defeats the monster." -Laura Hitchcock, CurtainUp internet magazine review.
