For all of our orders,
since we do craft for several different applications,
we ask that if there are any requirements regarding
the specifications of your product, that you advise
us at the time of ordering. Leather armour must be of
a considerable thickness for some types of combat, and
can be treated in a number of ways to accentuate this
battle-worthiness. We can accommodate any of your need
in this area including lighter weight armor for theater
armor and movie costume purposes, slightly heavier weight
leather (8-12 oz), water or wax hardened for LARP and/or
boffer weapons combat, or full armour grade leather
(13/16 oz, Sole bend leathers) for SCA (also available
"curbouille" hardened by boiling water or
beeswax). If you are new to purchasing armor take note:sufficient
padding is strongly recommended and is most often required
by most SCA groups. We do NOT include padding with your
armor. More often than not, 1/4 inch closed cell foam
and/or padded gambeson or qualified other padding will
suffice. Check with your organization's regulations
for specifications. Certain types of treatments which
are not included in the description of the item may
be available at an additional cost. Please contact us
if you have any questions.
Tell
us your application, and we'll make sure you're in compliance!
Very
little leather armour has survived the years
when it actually saw battle, but from what
remains have been found and what we know
of documented knowledge, we have recreated
our versions of the following cuirasses
and body protection, with the greatest effort
and care devoted to accuracy, protection
and application.
An authentic 6th Century B.C. leather scale
armour cuirass as displayed in the Metropolitan
Museum

The
Wisby(Visby) Coat of Plates
The
coat-of-plates was a development that appeared
in the 13th century which evolved from the
surcoat, which was occasionally reinforced
with oblong vertical plates riveted to the
cloth. Throughout the 14c the coat-of-plates
was the most common form of body armour
all the way through 1360's. It was constructed
of either a textile or leather garment lined
with plates. In illustrations from the period,
the coat-of-plates appeared to be worn over
the hauberk and beneath the surcoat. Supple
8 oz leather containing a row of 6 plates
down the inside front and several side and
back plates weigh in at 18 lbs total shipping
weight.

either 5/6 oz oil tanned or hand tooled
veg tanned under layer affixed by rivets
with 13/15 oz leather outer plates.
Oil
tanned available in brown or black. Veg

Roman Musculata Cuirass
The
full torso application of the above breastplate,
this leather Roman Musculata cuirass includes
the back and shoulder protection. The classical
"muscle breastplate" has been
said is fashioned after "imperial statues
and was maybe only worn by high ranking
officers for special occasions", thus
imparting the idea that this cuirass was
more for show than for protection.

The
Hoplite Cuirass
From
Circa 1st Century B.C.E. Greece comes the
Hoplite cuirass, hoplite corset, or when
made from linen, the Linothorax. We have
opted for this reproduction in leather due
to many LARP and SCA rules that exclude
cloth as an application.
Offered here is your choice of 7/8 oz,10/12
oz, or 13/15 oz armor
grade leather, a complete outfit when accompanied
by our hoplite greaves (See the "Combinations"
page). Available in sizes from 38"-44"
chest and 33"-42" waist.
Please provide chest, waist and underarm
to waist measurements.

Leather
Lorica Segmentata
Style
"A", Buckle/Strap Pauldron attachment
Syle
"B", Slot and Post Pauldron attachment
We
have searched for a Leather Lorica of armour
grade leather which matched the authenticity
replicated here and can not find its equal.
The
Roman legions that conquered all who opposed
Rome wished they could have been clad in
this much lighter but debatably more efficient
8/10 or 10/12 oz leather.
We choose the thickest grade leather available
or to your specifications. Also available
with laced torso closure (shown) or buckle
and strap torso closure.
Please
include Chest and waist measurements, and
underarm to waist measurement.
Oversize charges apply for chest and/or
waist sizes over 48".See our "pricing
policies" on the "Policies"
page.
One
of the most often complaints regarding the
steel Lorica Segmentata is that it "bites".
The steel segments often have sharp corners
and even with adequate padding can be quite
uncomfortable to move in. Here we present
a reproduction of the common Roman cuirass
modeled after 1st Century design, crafted
in 18 gauge steel and covered in leather
with brass accents.
Leather
scale armour has been found as early as
the 6th Century B.C.(see above photo from
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC) This
upper body protection was hardened scales
of leather affixed to a softer leather lining.
Available
in black and brown, and with unhardened
or hardened rows of overlapping scales.
