Roman "Manica" Arm
Anyone versed in Roman armour and history
knows, the well-known "Lorica Segmentata"
body cuirass of the Romans styling is often
also replicated by the "Manica" or segmented
arm. The Manica (translated, meaning "sleeve")
was not normally issued to or used by Roman
Legionnaires until around the 2nd or 3rd
Century. The sword or spear arm, incapable
of holding a shield needed protection and
the "Manica" served this
purpose. This
arm defense was also worn individually for
gladiator style combat. Our version is as
close as can be to what we know, in a leather
format. 7/8 oz plates of leather overlap
in segments upwards from the wrist towards
the shoulder. We have two versions, the
one pictured here and also without the
depicted
hand covering.

Segmented "Viking" Arm

Viking style derivation of our Roman style Manica, these arms are decidedly of Celtic/Norse
design. Celtic knotwork embossing of each
lame, and were used in the film
"Outlander" as the single arm worn by "Rothgar" in
the training battle with "Freya" (John Hurt and
Sophia Myles). Articulated elbow cop with
tooled "Four Directions" handcrafted detail and

times we must look at an effigy, a historic
representation of a person, usually as a sculpture),
and based on timeline, location and available

than refer to these as specifically studded 1/2
arms, we add the presupposition that there MAY have
existed a form of arm armour which were meant to

15th Century 3/4 Italian Arms
Fully
functional and SCA tested and approved, our new
Italian arms are crafted from the heaviest 13/15 oz
leather, include heavy 1" wide strapping and
buckles, and connect with lacing to each piece or to
arming points. Our formed heavy leather elbows are
also of 15th Century styling and are ONE piece,
wraparound and Cuirbouille hardened with our
traditional method for heavy
use. There are questions as to whether the
application of wax related products in the hardening
process constitutes a lubricant which assists in
cutting. It actually assists in deflecting the blade
as shown in the video, and protects against water

Ailettes (c. 1350-1450)
Ailettes were
shoulder defenses popular from the mid 13th to mid
14th Century. Positioning was either flat to cover
the top of the shoudler or angular to also assist in
protecting the collarbone or side of the neck.
Some scholars argue
that the ailette (from the french "little wing") was
mainly for heraldic display, however we opt for the
more protective device, and craft ours fom
cuirbouille 13/15 oz leather. Currently available
with the rampant lion embossed. More design to

and flair. The classic medieval pauldrons using our
celtic knotwork lames The top shoulder cop is
cuirbouille hardened using traditional medieval
methods. No, we don't just soak them in warm water,
mold them and call them "cuirbouille" like some
companies do. We actually use intense heat and
carefully gauge precisely what needs to be done to
both extensively harden and protect the leather
according to traditional medieval craftsmanship.
Then each section of
leather is trimmed in additional leather and wrapped
with heavy leather thonging. Hand hammered accents
and solid brass and stainless steel rivets and burrs
fill out the straps and buckles.
Wider
shoulder protection covering the back shoulder
blades and front collarbone area, these
hardened leather pauldrons have styling
to go along with great battle worthy protection.
Includes upper shoulder cop, under-shell,

your gladiator outfit. Since the Gladiator

shoulder cop is hardened by our traditional
